RESUMO

We experienced four cases of high-risk metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) in which first-line treatment with abiraterone showed a sustained long-term response of over 5 years. We conducted immunohistochemical staining of aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C3 (AKR1C3) expression, which associate with poor prognosis of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), and all prostate cancer tissue from four cases showed negative. These results suggested that AKR1C3-negative high-risk mCSPC cases may respond well to first-line treatment with abiraterone. This is the first report describing association of high-risk mCSPC and negative AKR1C3.

Clinical evidence has revealed that high-level activation of NRF2 caused by somatic mutations in NRF2 (NFE2L2) is frequently detected in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), whereas that caused by somatic mutations in KEAP1, a negative regulator of NRF2, is not. Here, we aspire to generate a mouse model of NRF2-activated ESCC using the cancer-derived NRF2L30F mutation and cancer driver mutant TRP53R172H. Concomitant expression of NRF2L30F and TRP53R172H results in formation of NRF2-activated ESCC-like lesions. In contrast, while squamous-cell-specific deletion of KEAP1 induces similar NRF2 hyperactivation, the loss of KEAP1 combined with expression of TRP53R172H does not elicit the formation of ESCC-like lesions. Instead, KEAP1-deleted cells disappear from the esophageal epithelium over time. These findings demonstrate that, while cellular NRF2 levels are similarly induced, NRF2 gain of function and KEAP1 loss of function elicits distinct fates of squamous cells. The NRF2L30F mutant mouse model developed here will be instrumental in elucidating the mechanistic basis leading to NRF2-activated ESCC.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is often accompanied by a loss of MUC6, but its pathogenic role in gastric carcinogenesis remains unclear. METHOD: Muc6 knockout (Muc6-/-) mice and Muc6-dsRED mice were newly generated. Tff1Cre, Golph3-/-, R26-Golgi-mCherry, Hes1flox/flox, Cosmcflox/flox, A4gnt-/- mice were also used. Histology, DNAs and RNAs, proteins, and sugar chains were analyzed by whole exon DNA sequence, RNA sequence, immunohistochemistry, lectin-binding assays, and LC-MS analysis. Gastric organoids and cell lines were used for in vitro assays and xenograft experiments. RESULT: Deletion of Muc6 in mice spontaneously causes pan-gastritis and invasive gastric cancers. Muc6-deficient tumor growth was dependent on MAPK activation, mediated by Golgi stress-induced upregulation of GOLPH3. Glycomic profiling revealed aberrant expression of mannose-rich N-linked glycans in gastric tumors, detected with Banana lectin in association with lack of MUC6 expression. We identified a precursor of clusterin as a binding partner of mannose glycans. MAPK activation, Golgi stress responses, aberrant mannose expression are found in a separate Cosmc- and A4gnt-deficient mouse models which lack normal O-glycosylation. Banana lectin-drug conjugates proved an effective treatment for mannose-rich murine and human gastric cancer. CONCLUSION: We propose that Golgi stress responses and aberrant glycans are important drivers of, and promising new therapeutic targets for gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In December 2019, COVID-19 spread rapidly across the globe. Throughout the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 repeatedly mutated, transitioning from the alpha variant to the omicron variant. The severity and mortality of COVID-19 have been linked to age, sex, and the presence of underlying diseases (respiratory, cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune diseases, as well as cancer). The clinical features of patients infected with COVID-19 following a stroke, however, are fully unknown. Therefore, it is significant to explore the appropriate treatment for these patients based on their clinical features. METHODS: Of the 6175 patients who visited Asahi Hospital (Tokyo, Japan) between November 2022 and February 2023, 206 were admitted. Of these 206 patients, the 44 that contracted COVID-19 while hospitalized for strokes were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Six (13.6%) of these patients died; four expired due to coagulopathy associated with ischemic heart failure and recurrent ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The mean D-dimer level increased to 3.53 in the deceased patients, while it was 1.64 in all patients. The platelet count was low in three of the deceased patients, while it was high in two patients. The severity of COVID-19 was significantly correlated with a high modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score and a high National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score. The timing of vaccination is inversely correlated with COVID-19 severity. CONCLUSION: Patients with COVID-19 after a stroke have high mortality rates due to coagulopathy. Stroke patients with high mRS scores and high NIHSS scores are more likely to develop severe COVID-19. Anticoagulant therapy should be administered to COVID-19 patients with high mRS scores following a stroke.

Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) is linked to contraction of D4Z4 repeats on chromosome 4q with SMCHD1 mutations acting as a disease modifier. D4Z4 heterochromatin disruption and abnormal upregulation of the transcription factor DUX4, encoded in the D4Z4 repeat, are the hallmarks of FSHD. However, defining the precise effect of D4Z4 contraction has been difficult because D4Z4 repeats are primate-specific and DUX4 expression is very rare in highly heterogeneous patient myocytes. We generated isogenic mutant cell lines harboring D4Z4 and/or SMCHD1 mutations in a healthy human skeletal myoblast line. We found that the mutations affect D4Z4 heterochromatin differently, and that SMCHD1 mutation or disruption of DNA methylation stabilizes otherwise variegated DUX4 target activation in D4Z4 contraction mutant cells, demonstrating the critical role of modifiers. Our study revealed amplification of the DUX4 signal through downstream targets, H3.X/Y and LEUTX. Our results provide important insights into how rare DUX4 expression leads to FSHD pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of the flare phenomenon in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) using the bone scan index (BSI) derived from 99mTc-methylenediphosphonate (MDP) bone scintigraphy images. METHODS: We categorized 72 patients from the PROSTAT-BSI registry with mCRPC who were followed-up for 2 years after starting docetaxel chemotherapy to groups based on pre-chemotherapy BSI values of < 1, 1-4, and > 4. We assessed the effects of the flare phenomenon (defined as a > 10% increase in the BSI within 3 months of starting chemotherapy, followed by > 10% improvement within the next 3 months) on survival using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazard analyses. RESULTS: The flare phenomenon was found in 26 (36%) of the 72 patients. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and hemoglobin (Hb) levels steadily increased, then deteriorated in patients with and without flare, respectively. Elevated BSI and PSA values at 3 months after starting therapy and the absence of abiraterone or/and enzalutamide therapy led to poor 2-year overall survival (OS) in the group without flare. In contrast, no influence was noticeable in the group with flare. The results of multivariable analyses that included only factors associated with PSA and BSI showed that increased baseline BSI (hazard ratio [HR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.86; P = 0.023) and PSA (HR, 7.15; 95% CI 2.13-24.04; P = 0.0015) values could be independent risk factors for patients with mCRPC without flare. However, these factors lost significance during flare. The risk for all-cause death was significantly higher among patients with BSI > 4 without, than with flare. The results of univariable analyses indicated that flare positively impacted survival (HR, 0.24; 95% CI 0.06‒0.91; P = 0.035). Multivariable analysis did not identify any factors that could predict outcomes. CONCLUSION: Favorable prognosis, with fewer disturbances from other factors such as the use of abiraterone or/and enzalutamide, PSA changes, and BSI, was attainable in cases when the mCRPC patient demonstrated flare phenomenon. Follow-up bone scintigraphy at least every 3 months could help to determine the prognosis of patients with bone metastasis of mCRPC.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common gastrointestinal cancers worldwide, with high morbidity and mortality rates. The evidence for the tumor-supporting capacities of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) that modulate cancer cell proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and tumor immunity, including in CRC, has been attracting attention. The present study examined the expression status of CD70 and POSTN in CRC and analyzed their association with clinicopathological features and clinical outcomes. In the present study, in total 15% (40/269) and 44% (119/269) of cases exhibited CD70 and POSTN expression on CAFs, respectively. Co-expression of CD70 and POSTN was detected in 8% (21/269) of patients. Fluorescent immunohistochemistry identified the co-expression of CD70 and POSTN with FAP and PDPN, respectively. ACTA2 was not co-expressed with CD70 or POSTN in CRC CAFs. CRC with CD70+/POSTN+ status in CAFs was significantly associated with distant organ metastasis (p = 0.0020) or incomplete resection status (p = 0.0011). CD70+/POSTN+ status tended to associate with advanced pT stage (p = 0.032) or peritoneal metastasis (p = 0.0059). Multivariate Cox hazards regression analysis identified CD70+/POSTN+ status in CAFs [hazard ratio (HR) = 3.78] as a potential independent risk factor. In vitro experiments revealed the activated phenotypes of colonic fibroblasts induced by CD70 and POSTN, while migration and invasion assays identified enhanced migration and invasion of CRC cells co-cultured with CD70- and POSTN-expressing colonic fibroblasts. On the basis of our observations, CD70 and POSTN immunohistochemistry can be used in the prognostication of CRC patients. CRC CAFs may be a promising target in the treatment of CRC patients.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, classifications using immune cell infiltration have been applied to many types of tumors; however, mesotheliomas have been less frequently evaluated. METHODS: In this study, 60 well-characterized pleural mesotheliomas (PMs) were evaluated immunohistochemically for the characteristics of immune cells within tumor microenvironment (TME) using 10 immunohistochemical markers CD3, CD4, CD8, CD56, CD68, CD163, FOXP3, CD27, PD-1 and TIM-3. For further characterization of PMs, hierarchical clustering analyses using these 10 markers were performed. RESULTS: Among the immune cell markers, CD3 (P < 0.0001), CD4 (P = 0.0016), CD8 (P = 0.00094), CD163+ (P = 0.042) and FOXP3+ (P = 0.025) were significantly associated with unfavorable clinical outcome. Immune checkpoint receptor expressions on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes such as PD-1 (P = 0.050), CD27 (P = 0.014) and TIM-3 (P = 0.0098) were also associated with unfavorable survival. Hierarchical clustering analyses identified three groups showing specific characteristics and significant associations with patient survival (P = 0.011): the highest number of immune cells (ICHigh); the lowest number of immune cells, especially CD8+ and CD163+ cells (ICLow); and intermediate number of immune cells (ICInt). ICHigh tumors showed significantly higher expression of PD-L1 (P = 0.00038). Cox proportional hazard model identified ICHigh [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.90] and ICInt (HR = 2.97) as potential risk factors compared with ICLow. Tumor CD47 (HR = 2.36), tumor CD70 (HR = 3.04) and tumor PD-L1 (HR = 3.21) expressions were also identified as potential risk factors for PM patients. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate immune checkpoint and/or immune cell-targeting therapies against CD70-CD27 and/or CD47-SIRPA axes may be applied for PM patients in combination with PD-L1-PD-1 targeting therapies in accordance with their tumor immune microenvironment characteristics.

Transcription factor MAFB regulates various homeostatic functions of macrophages. This study explores the role of MAFB in brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis using macrophage-specific Mafb-deficient (Mafbf/f::LysM-Cre) mice. We find that Mafb deficiency in macrophages reduces thermogenesis, energy expenditure, and sympathetic neuron (SN) density in BAT under cold conditions. This phenotype features a proinflammatory environment that is characterized by macrophage/granulocyte accumulation, increases in interleukin-6 (IL-6) production, and IL-6 trans-signaling, which lead to decreases in nerve growth factor (NGF) expression and reduction in SN density in BAT. We confirm MAFB regulation of IL-6 expression using luciferase readout driven by IL-6 promoter in RAW-264.7 macrophage cell lines. Immunohistochemistry shows clustered organization of NGF-producing cells in BAT, which are primarily TRPV1+ vascular smooth muscle cells, as additionally shown using single-cell RNA sequencing and RT-qPCR of the stromal vascular fraction. Treating Mafbf/f::LysM-Cre mice with anti-IL-6 receptor antibody rescues SN density, body temperature, and energy expenditure.

Meiosis is a specialized type of cell division that occurs physiologically only in germ cells. We previously demonstrated that MYC-associated factor X (MAX) blocks the ectopic onset of meiosis in embryonic and germline stem cells in culture systems. Here, we investigated the Max gene's role in mouse primordial germ cells. Although Max is generally ubiquitously expressed, we revealed that sexually undifferentiated male and female germ cells had abundant MAX protein because of their higher Max gene expression than somatic cells. Moreover, our data revealed that this high MAX protein level in female germ cells declined significantly around physiological meiotic onset. Max disruption in sexually undifferentiated germ cells led to ectopic and precocious expression of meiosis-related genes, including Meiosin, the gatekeeper of meiotic onset, in both male and female germ cells. However, Max-null male and female germ cells did not complete the entire meiotic process, but stalled during its early stages and were eventually eliminated by apoptosis. Additionally, our meta-analyses identified a regulatory region that supports the high Max expression in sexually undifferentiated male and female germ cells. These results indicate the strong connection between the Max gene and physiological onset of meiosis in vivo through dynamic alteration of its expression.

BACKGROUND: A new subtype of prostate cancer called treatment-related neuroendocrine prostate carcinoma (t-NEPC) was added to the revised World Health Organization classification of prostate cancer in 2022. t-NEPC cases are increasing, and there is no established standard treatment. METHODS: A 49-year-old male patient was referred to our department for dysuria. A rectal examination and a prostate biopsy revealed stony hardness and prostate adenocarcinoma, respectively. Imaging studies confirmed the presence of multiple bone and lymph node metastases. The patient was started on upfront treatment with androgen deprivation therapy and an androgen receptor signaling inhibitor, which resulted in a significant (>90%) decrease in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The patient experienced postrenal failure 6 months later, attributable to local disease progression. Concurrently, there was an elevation in neuron-specific enolase (NSE) levels and an enlargement of pelvic lymph node metastases, without PSA progression. RESULTS: Biopsy specimen for cancer genome profiling revealed deletion of BRCA 2 and PTEN, AR amplification, and the presence of the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion gene. Based on increased NSE and BRCA2 mutations, a diagnosis of t-NEPC with BRCA2 mutation was eventually made. The patient received docetaxel chemotherapy and pelvic radiotherapy. Subsequently, he was treated with olaparib. His NSE levels decreased, and he achieved a complete response (CR). However, 18 months following the olaparib administration, brain metastases appeared despite the absence of pelvic tumor relapse, and the patient's PSA levels remained low. Consequently, the patient underwent resection of the brain metastases using gamma knife and whole-brain radiotherapy but died approximately 3 months later. CONCLUSION SUBSECTIONS: Platinum-based chemotherapy is often administered for the treatment of t-NEPC, but there are few reports on the effectiveness of olaparib in patients with BRCA2 mutations. In a literature review, this case demonstrated the longest duration of effectiveness with olaparib alone without platinum-based chemotherapy. Additionally, the occurrence of relatively rare, fatal brain metastases in prostate cancer after a long period of CR suggests the necessity of regular brain imaging examinations.

OBJECTIVES: A large-scale nationwide epidemiological survey of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) was conducted via the Internet in 2023 to clarify the current prevalence of LUTS and evaluate its impact on daily life in Japan. METHODS: The survey was conducted among individuals aged 20-99 years old who had anonymously registered with a Japanese online research company. The survey consisted of 48 questions related to LUTS and daily life. RESULTS: A total of 6210 participants (3088 females and 3122 males), who were selected by probability sampling based on the composition of the Japanese population (age range: 20-99), were recruited. The overall prevalence of LUTS was 77.9% among the subjects aged ≥20 and 82.5% among those aged ≥40. The prevalence of LUTS differed between the sexes and trends toward significant increases in prevalence with age were seen for almost all LUTS. Furthermore, the prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) was 11.9% among the subjects aged ≥20 and 13.8% among those aged ≥40. This study also showed that LUTS negatively affected daily life. However, the percentage of subjects who visited a physician to receive treatment for LUTS was low, including for participants with a history of treatment for LUTS, although this increased with age. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of LUTS, including OAB, increased with age and negatively affected daily life. However, since the percentage of patients who visit a physician to receive treatment for LUTS remains low, further educational activities regarding LUTS are necessary.

Flow diverter (FD) placement is increasingly used to treat large supraclinoid aneurysms. Here, we report a case of hydrocephalus following FD placement. One patient in her 60 s underwent FD placement combined with coil embolization. Within 1 month, the patient started to show visual field defects and symptoms of hydrocephalus, which worsened within another month. We report that hydrocephalus developed acutely, without high protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid, and as a complication using a Surpass Streamline. Although the precise mechanisms are unclear, our report suggests a different mechanism for the development of hydrocephalus after FD placement combined with coil embolization.

A female patient in her 50s who underwent chemotherapy for left primary breast cancer presented with cancerous pleurisy and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and liver biopsy revealed gastric and liver cancer. Distinguishing between primary and metastatic cancer by pathological findings is difficult using hematoxylin and eosin staining. We diagnosed and treated simultaneous primary breast cancer (ER-positive) and gastric cancer with liver metastasis (ER-negative), based on differences in estrogen receptor expression. The patient lived for 10 months with chemotherapy. After death, an autopsy was performed because the endoscopic results were atypical for primary gastric cancer, and additional immunohistochemical studies indicated gastric metastasis of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic diagnosis is essential for predicting the curability of early gastric cancer (EGC; R0 resection) before treatment, but the relationship between ulcerative lesions and clinical outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) or potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) on the morphological changes of ulcerative EGCs and its relevance to the clinical outcomes. METHODS: Altogether, 143 patients with differentiated ulcerative EGC that were resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection were retrospectively identified and divided into the following two cohorts depending on their PPI/P-CAB administration status: PPI/P-CAB (n = 76) and non-PPI/P-CAB (n = 67) cohorts. Furthermore, in each cohort, the patients were further divided into the improved and unimproved subgroups based on the ulcerative changes. RESULTS: In the PPI/P-CAB cohort, the deep submucosal invasion and lymphovascular invasion rates were significantly higher in the unimproved subgroup than in the improved subgroup, resulting in a significantly lower R0 resection rate. Contrarily, no significant differences were found between the two subgroups in the non-PPI/P-CAB cohort. The significance of PPI/P-CAB administration was observed only in the ulcerative EGCs with open-type atrophy (R0 resection rate; improved vs. unimproved, 90.9% vs. 48.0%, p = 0.001). When the finding of improved ulcer with PPI/P-CAB administration was used as the indication of endoscopic resection in ulcerative EGCs with open-type atrophy, high sensitivity (78.9%) and accuracy (76.3%) rates for the curability were observed which were higher than those of conventional endoscopic diagnosis alone (p = 0.021). CONCLUSION: PPI or P-CAB administration might contribute to the potential selection of ulcerative EGCs, enabling endoscopic curative resection.

We here demonstrate that SERTAD1 is an adaptor protein responsible for the regulation of lysine 63 (K63)-linked NLRP3 polyubiquitination by the Cullin1 E3 ubiquitin ligase upon inflammasome activation. SERTAD1 specifically binds to NLRP3 but not to other inflammasome sensors. This endogenous interaction increases after inflammasome activation, interfering with the interaction between NLRP3 and Cullin1. Interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-18 secretion, as well as the cleavage of gasdermin D, are decreased in SERTAD1 knockout bone-marrow-derived macrophages, together with reduced formation of the NLRP3 inflammasome complex. Additionally, SERTAD1-deficient mice show attenuated severity of monosodium-uric-acid-induced peritonitis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Analysis of public datasets indicates that expression of SERTAD1 mRNA is significantly increased in the patients of autoimmune diseases. Thus, our findings uncover a function of SERTAD1 that specifically reduces Cullin1-mediated NLRP3 polyubiquitination via direct binding to NLRP3, eventually acting as a crucial factor to regulate the initiation of NLRP3-mediated inflammasome activation.

Androgen deprivation therapy has achieved significant success in treating prostate cancer through strategies centered on the androgen receptor. However, the emergence of castration-resistant prostate cancer highlights this therapy limitation, underscoring the need to elucidate the mechanisms of treatment resistance. This review aimed to focus on multifaceted resistance mechanisms, including androgen receptor overexpression, splice variants, missense mutations, the involvement of the glucocorticoid receptor, and alterations in coregulators and transcription factors, revealing their roles in castration-resistant prostate cancer progression. These mechanisms promote cell survival and proliferation, depending on the androgen receptor signaling pathway, leading to resistance to conventional therapies. Amplification and mutations in the androgen receptor gene facilitate selective adaptation in treatment-resistant cells, consequently diminishing therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, the activation of glucocorticoid receptors and aberrant regulation of specific coregulators and transcription factors contribute to the activation of androgen receptor-independent signaling pathways, promoting cell survival and proliferation. These findings hold promise for identifying new targets for treating castration-resistant prostate cancer and developing personalized treatment strategies. The development of future therapies will hinge on precisely targeting the androgen receptor signaling pathway, necessitating a deeper understanding of the molecular targets unique to castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Objective: Embolic protection devices are useful for preventing distal embolism during carotid artery stenting (CAS); however, complications have been reported. The successful removal of a filter fragment trapped at the distal edge of a carotid stent during the retrieval procedure is described. Case Presentation: CAS was performed for internal carotid artery stenosis in a patient in his 70s, and the carotid stent was successfully placed. During the retrieval procedure, the tip of the filter was trapped at the distal edge of the stent and detached from the filter. Using a snare kit, the filter tip was successfully retrieved, and no postoperative neurological symptoms occurred. Conclusion: The edge of a carotid stent can potentially trap devices. When trapping or fragmentation of a device is suspected, it is necessary to evaluate the situation and cause, and the device should be appropriately retrieved without using force.

BACKGROUND: Documenting the grant acquisition characteristics of a highly selective group of researchers could provide insights into the research and faculty development of talented individuals, and the insights gained to foster such researchers will help university management strengthen their research capacity. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the role of human connections in the success of biomedical researchers in Japanese universities. METHODS: This study used grant data from the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (GIA) program, the largest competitive research funding program in Japan, to collect information on projects and their implementation systems obtained throughout the participants' careers. Grant success was measured by the number and amounts of the awards obtained while participants occupied the role of principal investigator. Human connections were quantified by the number of projects in which the participants took part as members and were classified by their relationship with the project leader. Data were matched with information on career history, publication performance, and experience of the participants with government-funded programs apart from GIA and were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS: Early-career interpersonal relationships, as measured using the h-index value of the researchers who provided the participants with their initial experience as project members, had a positive effect on grant success. The experience of contributing to prestigious research programs led by top researchers dramatically increased the cumulative amount of GIA awards received by the participants over time. Univariate logistic regression analyses revealed that more interactions with upper-level researchers resulted in fewer acquisitions of large programs (odds ratio [OR] 0.67, 95% CI 0.50-0.89). Collaboration with peers increased the success rate of ≥2 research grants in large programs in situations in which both the participant and project leader were professors (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.06-1.26). Tracking the process of research development, we found that collaboration during the periods of 10 to 14 years and 15 to 19 years after completing a doctorate degree determined the size of the project that the participant would obtain-interactions with peer researchers and subordinates during the 10- to 14-year postdegree period had positive effects on ≥2 large-program acquisitions (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.09-2.09 and OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10-1.57, respectively), whereas interactions with subordinates during the 15- to 19-year postdegree period also had positive effects (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.25-1.07). Furthermore, relationships that remained narrowly focused resulted in limited grant success for small programs. CONCLUSIONS: Human networking is important for improving an individual's ability to obtain external funding. The results emphasize the importance of having a high-h-indexed collaborator to obtain quality information early in one's career; working with diverse, nonsupervisory personnel at the midcareer stage; and engaging in synergistic collaborations upon establishing a research area in which one can take more initiatives.
